Road to the White House

Risking frostbite to support John Kerry

Monday, January 26, 2004

Today was similar to the last two days. We got to the office at 9:30 and went out canvassing. The group I was with had a great time. We got lost for about 20 minutes and eventually just decided to head back to the office and retrace our steps. The most interesting door that I knocked on was a Republican lady. I still don't know how she got on the canvass list. She was a registered Republican so walking up to the door I knew I was in for it. I rang to doorbell and she answered. She didn't even say anything. She just pointed at me a laughed, so I did the logical thing; I started laughing with her. She waved good bye and kindly shut the door in my face. I suggested we take her off the list. Tomorrow is the big day. We have to be at work at 5:45 because the polls open at 6:00 (in some places). I'm off to bed. Good night.

I wish anybody reading this could have experienced what I did yesterday. It was the first full day of GOTV (get out the vote) weekend. We got to the Kerry office and could barely get inside the door. Scott Wolf and a couple of congressmen were giving speeches. The atmosphere was electric. I then went out canvassing with four high ranking members of Kerry's Washington staff, one was his economic advisor. Today should be even better. We are going to a Kerry rally at 1:00 and should be able to meet Ted Kennedy. A couple of us went to the 100 Club Dinner yesterday. Each presidential candidate gave a speech and then walked around the rooms talking to people. I met Wesley Clark, saw John Edwards, and shook John Kerry's hand. It was great to be that close to the candidates.

Go Kerry!!!

Today was much better then yesterday. I spent most of the day in a town called Brookline, which is right next to the Mass border. It is an unbelievablely small town with a main street that consists of two gas stations. We did some lit drops and a small vis on a rotary that had little traffic. The rest of the day was spent hand writing postcards. It was quite an experience when I went to the back of the office and overheard a staffer setting up an interview with Wolf Blitzer. I guess I have spent so much time doing the little things of the campaign that the big picture has not sunk in. I am actually working on a presidential campaign in New Hampshire. Thats pretty cool.

Today has been the worst day. I'm am pretty sick and unable to attend the debate tonight. I am going to try and get some sleep so I will feel better for this weekend.

Go Kerry!

Finally I have time to write a blog. I have been very busy over the last day. I have spent most of the last two days doing lit drops all around Nashua and a town called Peterbourgh. I am the only person in our group that has not had to make any phone calls, but I know that will change. What stood out most about yesterday was a visibility event that we did on our street corner. It started with some Dean people standing just down the street from our office. Some Clark people then came out and stood across from the Dean people. Someone in our office saw all this and told everyone to get outside with a sign. About 25 people from our office march up to the street corner shouting "Bring it on". We had a lot more people then they did and we were much louder. Our chants were echoing down the street. We did not stop until the other two groups went inside. Dean left first then Clark slowly went away to the chants of "We want a Democrat". It was a great experience. The plan for today is to go to a John Kerry town meeting that is taking place right up the road. Hopefully I will be able to write later today to tell everyone what happened.

Today was the first day of the campaign and it was a crazy. I went into this thinking that I would talk on the phone most of the time and maybe stand outside, but this was not the case. I ended up going to a town that is 45 minutes west of here and standing at an intersection with about fifteen other Kerry supports. After about an hour we went to make literature drops on a couple of nearby streets. After we finished that we went back to the office and made more literature drops around Nashua. The people in the office are energetic and very friendly. I can't wait till tomorrow, especially since Kerry has won the caucus. Well I am going to get going because I have to get up in five hours to go meet Kerry at the airport (6:30 AM). Till next time.

It is 10:00 AM Sunday Morning and I am on my way down to Nashua to meet up with the rest of the class. There is a light snow falling right now. It looks a little different. Hopefully I will be able to find a computer in Nashua.

Till then
